Concrete is the mostly used materials in the civil engineering field. Due to the lack of effective on-line monitoring in the service process of concrete engineering, grave worksite accidents frequently occur and cause casualties and property losses. It is recognized that the real-time and effective safety monitoring on the concrete in service is a commonly way to solve above problem. But there are many obvious compatibility issues between existing monitoring materials and concrete, such as poor interface coupling, narrow frequency range, high acoustic impedance, which lead to inaccurate and unreliable monitoring results and misjudgment. On the other hand, the existing monitoring materials cannot locate the damage sources of the concrete structures because they generally do not possess the ability to measure the stress wave in specific direction, and cannot distinguish the damage signals in different directions.
To solve above-mentioned problem, Professor Cheng Xin has put forward the composite concept of cement and piezoelectric ceramic to prepare monitoring devices. Through the design of materials composite and electric filed distribution, interface control and the establishment of force-electricity-sound model and monitoring system integration. Over more than a decade of research and engineering application, a set of preparation of monitoring materials and devices and engineering applied technology with independent intellectual property rights has been established. Around this direction, the team leading by Professor Cheng Xin has obtained over more than 10 national projects, and won a second prize of National Technology Invention Award. Relevant research results have been popularized and produced in many enterprises and applied in more than 10 important projects.
